Any film that deals with the topics of forbidden love and the loss of innocence all while being set in pre-WWII era is good in my book. I’m a romantic dreamer by nature (struggling filmmaker type) and a fish and can relate all too well to the above mentioned themes (except the pre WW2 part). As much as I dig the more traditional ‘guy type’ films of Scorsese, Spielberg, De Palma and Tarantino (my personal Fab 4) I am a sucker for love stories with a punch; Titanic, Casablanca, Romancing The Stone, About Last Night, The Last of the Mohicans, True Romance and on and on ………
Emma the fine one.
Based on the 1945 acclaimed novel by Evelyn Waugh, I’m seeing Oscar buzz all around this one. Some films you can just tell. I have the gift. I see the aura in some films. While there are several current front runners (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Australia, Burn After Reading, The Argentine (CHE)), this film looks poised to run with the big dogs despite the limited release in 33 theatres. It’s managed to bring in $339,616 in one week. (the film has brought in $486,132 in just 6 days in 69 theatres.). Hmmmmmm … Put the film in 2700 theatres and you’re looking at a 27,000,000 opening weekend, right ?
Directed by relative unknown Julian Jarrold , yes, the department stores Jarrold’s, and featuring two time Oscar winner (Screenplay and Acting), the always wonderful Emma Thompson.
First day of shooting.
The trailer’s been out for sometime, but I just finally got to seeing it (at the request of a certain someone who said it reminded her of two people we both know very well, cough, cough) Sigh. I’ll let you all decipher that code. Anyways, here’s the trailer. Enjoy it and then run out and see it if you’re fortunate to have in your city.
Also be sure to check out the main site; one of the coolest displays of web design I’ve seen for a film. I’m on this one. Give me some tale of love and throw in any genre you want, horror, adventure, war or just plain old class struggle and I’m sold.
Maybe it’s my own life that makes me want to see these things work out for our onscreen lovers. But, I haven’t read the book nor have any clue how this one ends. So no spoilers !
Never one to hide my overall lack of interest in Superhero films (see last post), if there is one franchise that has caught my eye and it’s Nolan’s vision of Batman and Gotham. I always disliked Tim Burton’s absurd spin on Batman; too Burtonesque for me but thoroughly enjoyed the first entry from Nolan. I want superhero films to take place in my world and not some made up overly slick spectacle of a world.
This film is sure to break some records with last nights 3000 theatre midnight showings but if there is one thing I want to see, and that is Heath Ledgers performance. Not because of his untimely death, but because the trailers are giving us some freakishly mad scenes. Ledger, like a chameleon, doesn’t even resemble Ledger.
I didn’t even know it was him until someone pointed it out. Whereas his performance in Brokeback was a subdued, quiet and intimate role, he appears to have taken this one to the opposite extreme of the acting spectrum.
I was a fan of him starting with The Patriot and then Monster’s Ball, The Brothers Grimm and Lords of Dogtown. Knowing he was an obvious talent, who would have thought he was even capable of this performance.
Look at me, I haven’t seen it and am in love with it. Is it possible to deem an Oscar based only on previews ? Perhaps. Buzz is, that he may be the first winner posthumously of the Golden Statue since Peter Finch pulled it off for 1976’s Network.
I do recall, years ago, a rumour circulating that there would be a 4th film added to the Mad Max series with Ledger being Max’s son. I was really into that idea.
Here is a compilation of Joker scenes from the film.
The Trailer
Yeah baby. 3 trailers worth watching.
Terminator Salvation
Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a Terminator whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind.
I welcome this franchise 100%. I’ve always though the franchise should move to the root of the storyline, Skynet, the future, the apocalypse. Christian Bale ? Interesting choice in casting; I would have cast Will Smith.
I’m kidding.
Body of Lies
A CIA operative (Leonardo DiCaprio) is sent to Jordan to find a high-ranking terrorist. While in Jordan, the operative forms an uneasy alliance with the head of Jordan’s covert operations.
Leo and Crowe ? I don’t even think I need to say anything else. Two of this gennies finest actors.
Watchmen
In an alternate 1985 where superheroes exist, Richard Nixon is still president, and tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are at an all time high. The vigilante Rorschach is investigating the murder of the Comedian, and uncovers a plot to discredit and murder various heroes. Rorschach discovers a far wider ranging conspiracy involving his colleagues’ past which could completely change the course of history.
One word; Carla Gugino. Okay two words. This woman is as fine as they come. A lot of buzz and from the killer director Zach Snyder who is batting .1000 in my book (Dawn of the Dead, 300). I have never been a fan of Superhero films and didn’t much read the comics growing up (always a film junkie), but have always loved graphic novels.
Any film with Carla and this chicka named Malin Ackerman is a must see.
Silk Spectre the Second
