A Q&A with David Cronenberg and Howard Shore will precede the screening!
Okay, now read on.
I was 16 years old when I first saw this engaging remake of the 1958 sci-fi horror film, a project originally slated for Tim Burton (Shudder to think), but instead going to Master Filmmaker David Cronenberg (The Brood, The Dead Zone, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises).
A Sci Fi Horror Love story telling a tale of (Like many of Cronenberg’s films) of metamorphosis and the darker aspects of human emotions and behavior. But the most intriguing element is the doomed love affair between Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Cronenberg was at the Top of his game during this period.
Be Afraid.
The film is a creepy, synthesized gorefest which is simply one of the more underrated films of the last 20 years. No CGI creature effects here, The Fly boasts Oscar Winning Makeup FX from Chris Walas & Stephan Dupuis.
Bravo list’s it at #33 in their 100 Scariest Movie Moments. I think that is reason enough; if you haven’t seen this on the big screen (I did!), then here’s your chance at the film in all it’s glory and a remastered print. Read on or check out the official site for more information, here.

THE FLY
1986 95 MIN RATED R
DIR David Cronenberg
THE FLY is an extraordinary example of Cronenberg’s particular brand of “body horror”; flesh transformed by disease. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is an eccentric scientist, whose experiments with teleportation go awry, leading to one of the horror genre’s most disgusting and gory physical transformations. Ultimately, David Cronenberg’s version of THE FLY – based on a short story by George Langelaan and the 1958 film that starred Vincent Price — is a dark romantic tragedy about the wasting away of a brilliant man who mutates into an insect as his loved one looks on helplessly.
AFI, in association with the LA Opera, presents a brand new print , to coincide with the US premiere of the opera The Fly.

In this day and age of remakes, THE FLY is a great example of what a remake should be!
(The idea of taking an existing movie that is really dull and making it into something better.)
I think THE FLY is one Jeff Goldblum’s best performances ever! They should have given him an oscar for best actor!
And let us not forget Chris Walas’ genius make-up effects! (Which he did receive an oscar for.)
