THE DARK KNIGHT COMETH

Never one to hide my overall lack of interest in Superhero films (see last post), if there is one franchise that has caught my eye and it’s Nolan’s vision of Batman and Gotham. I always disliked Tim Burton’s absurd spin on Batman; too Burtonesque for me but thoroughly enjoyed the first entry from Nolan. I want superhero films to take place in my world and not some made up overly slick spectacle of a world.

This film is sure to break some records with last nights 3000 theatre midnight showings but if there is one thing I want to see, and that is Heath Ledgers performance. Not because of his untimely death, but because the trailers are giving us some freakishly mad scenes. Ledger, like a chameleon, doesn’t even resemble Ledger.

I didn’t even know it was him until someone pointed it out. Whereas his performance in Brokeback was a subdued, quiet and intimate role, he appears to have taken this one to the opposite extreme of the acting spectrum.

I was a fan of him starting with The Patriot and then Monster’s Ball, The Brothers Grimm and Lords of Dogtown. Knowing he was an obvious talent, who would have thought he was even capable of this performance.

Look at me, I haven’t seen it and am in love with it. Is it possible to deem an Oscar based only on previews ? Perhaps. Buzz is, that he may be the first winner posthumously of the Golden Statue since Peter Finch pulled it off for 1976’s Network.

I do recall, years ago, a rumour circulating that there would be a 4th film added to the Mad Max series with Ledger being Max’s son. I was really into that idea.

Here is a compilation of Joker scenes from the film.
